One postdoctoral position will be available in the field(s) of text/data mining, data extraction/aggregation, technology forecasting, and technology management. The researchers will be working with Dr. Wei Lee Woon of the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology and in close collaboration with Professor Stuart Madnick of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The focus of the project is on novel methods for automatically mining science and technology information sources to support the formation of viable research strategies. Examples of the kinds of sources to be exploited include various publications and patents databases, industrial reports and even blogs and other “social†websites; the expected outcomes include growth forecasts, tools for visualizing research topics in such a way as to maximize researcher productivity and a report detailing the results of a case-study on technologies for Alternative and Renewable Energies.
The main skills required include mathematics, modeling and programming (currently Python and C are in active use but proficiency in other languages will be considered – we are more interested in your technical foundation than in the number of the libraries which you are acquainted with!). In addition, skills and experiences that are relevant to any of the following key project components will confer a significant advantage to the respective candidates:
- Data mining
- Machine learning
- Context mediation & the Semantic Web
- Data Extraction from Semi-Structured and Unstructured sources
- Alternative and Renewable Energy
- Application development and software engineering
The duration of the appointment will be for one year but with the possibility of extension, depending on the status of the project. Remunerations for the successful candidate will be extremely competitive and will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the succesful candidate.
The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology is a non-profit, graduate-level institution established with the assistance of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Under a cooperative agreement signed in December, 2006, MIT is assisting the Masdar Institute to emulate its own standards of excellence in Abu Dhabi, and to become a regional engine for technology-driven growth.
