The University College Dublin, ranked 108th internationally and located in the dynamic and exciting city of Dublin, Ireland, is seeking to recruit a master’s candidate to conduct research in the field of laser scanning data storage and manipulation. The position is funded by a grant from National Digital Research Centre and will involve the hosting, querying and analysing of three-dimensional laser scanning point clouds in an Oracle Spatial 11g Database Management System. The primary responsibility will be the creation of a Graphical User Interface.

The position provides a gross salary of €18,000 per year for 16 months. The candidate would ideally begin in early January.

Main responsibilities include the following:

  • Developing a graphical user interface
  • Coding for the implementation of octree, R-tree, and related techniques in Oracle Spatial 11g in a pc environment
  • Contributing to all interim and final reports

The candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and a strong interest in one or more of the following fields: database management systems, spatial data handling, laser scanning data storage and manipulation. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Computer Science program under the direction of Dr. Michela Bertolotto and co-advised through Civil Engineering under the direction of Dr. Debra Laefer.

The successful candidate is expected to attend and participate in the PI’s Dr. Laefer’s weekly laboratory meetings for her larger Urban Modelling Group. In addition, the researcher will perform certain limited administrative and dissemination functions in support of the project and the PI’s. These functions may include but are not limited to presenting posters and conference papers, contributing to related funding proposals, and identifying background source material.

Proficiency in English and programming experience in Java or GML are expected. Strong system skills, as well as experience with real-life deployments, are a plus.
