A graduate research assistantship is available for a PhD student starting in September 2008.
Requirements:
CS, ME, or EE PhD student with a GPA of at least 3.5
Programming skills in C++ and Matlab
Interested in image processing and optical interferometry techniques
Project description:
Real-time image processing, and software development in C++ and Matlab, of digital speckle pattern interferoimage (DSPI) technique. Prospective candidate will initially train with a graduating Ph.D. student to continue the research and development of a prototype optical system for the real-time monitoring and automatic control the bolt tightening process based on pattern recognition of optical images of the deformed surface of the bolted joint. During the course of this project, an image analysis module and a control unit should be developed. The image analysis module suppresses the measurement noise and models the input speckle fringe patterns sensed by the existing optical setting. Initial financial support covers the first 12 months and is provided by the Fastening and Joining Research Institute (FAJRI); regular progress meetings and report are required. Renewal of the financial support past the first year is closely tied to student progress and scholarly publication.
