The Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) invites applications for several open PhD and PostDoc research positions in the Department of Computing Science and Engineering (INGI), in the context of different research projects. A detailed list of all open positions, including research themes, sought profiles and expected duration, is available below. Most of the vacant positions can be filled in immediately. There is no closing date but candidates will be considered on a first-come first-served basis, provided that they meet all profile, quality and administrative requirements.

Research project : Modelling, Verification and Evolution of Software (MoVES)

Overall project description: Software-intensive systems are among the most complex artefacts ever built. In the development of such systems, the use of rigorous models and analysis methods is essential to make sure that the software satisfies its requirements and exhibits the desired properties (e.g., safety, security, reliability, consistency). At the same time, in order to adapt to the constantly changing requirements and technology, these systems must be able to evolve over time, without breaking their essential properties. The BelSPo IAP-MoVES project combines the leading Belgian research teams in software engineering, with recognised scientific excellence in model-driven engineering (MDE), software evolution, formal modelling and verification (FMV) and aspect-oriented software development (AOSD). The project aims to advance the state of the art in each of these domains. The long term objective of our network is to strengthen existing collaborations and forge new links between those teams, and to leverage and disseminate our research expertise in this domain at a European level.

The researcher will be working on one or more of the research themes related to the project: model-driven engineering, software evolution, formal modelling and verification and aspect-oriented software development. Skills: The researcher will be working in the domain of formal verification techniques based on model checking and should have a healthy interest in formal aspects of computer science (modelling, logic, ...) as well as in the implementation of software tools supporting the techniques studied.

Skills: The researcher will be working in the domain of constraint programming and local search. He/she will be part of the Constraint Group (http://becool.info.ucl.ac.be/). Backgound in artificial intelligence and programming languages are required.

Contact person: Prof. Kim Mens (kim dot mens at uclouvain dot be)
Skills: The researcher should have an active interest in software evolution and the problems arising in source code when a software system or its design evolves. Background in programming, programming languages, software development tools, object-oriented programming, software maintenance or restructuring are required. Knowledge of Smalltalk is a plus. The researcher will be part of the RELEASED research group (http://released.info.ucl.ac.be/ ; page under construction).

Skills: The researcher should have a strong background and interest in the construction and analysis of models for mission-critical systems, including safety-critical medical systems, and in the development of tools for automating model construction, analysis, and evolution.

Research project : Variability in Software-Intensive Product Development (VariBru)

VariBru is a research project initiated in the framework of the Brussels Impulse Programme for ICT. It is funded by the Brussels Capital Region. VariBru addresses the following important trade-off for ICT industry to make in the domain of variability: "How to remain productive and cost-effective while at the same time offer a much richer product variety to customers?" This variability trade-off is relevant for the ICT industry, because companies face an increasing need for providing customised solutions. In this context, an effective variability strategy has not been realised yet. The different research partners in this project perform collaborative research in key areas of variability.

Contract: 1 starting researcher
Degree: Engineering degree in Computer Science or Master in Computer Science

Duration: Until August 31, 2010. The project may get prolonged after this date.

Contract: 1 post-doc researcher
Degree: PhD in Computer Science
Starting date: Immediately

Skills: Investigation of programming abstractions, tools and techniques to build programming languages, software development tools and software systems that can cope with dynamic changes to context. The researcher will collaborate with the researchers of the RELEASED research group that are working on the Ambience programming language and environment (a language for context-aware programming).

Skills: Exploring techniques for representing and reasoning about variability of system models throughout the life-cycle of software-intensive systems, and between different variants of a system in product-line development.
