Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e)
Vacancy for a Ph.D. student in
Information Systems in Purchasing
Eindhoven University of Technology is one of the world’s leading research universities (ranked by the Times Higher Education Supplement). It is in particular well-known for its joint research with industry (ranked number one worldwide by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies). The research groups in which this Ph.D. project will be embedded have a strong national and international reputation for research on topics such as ‘workflow patterns’, ‘purchasing and supply chain management’ and ‘cross-organizational workflow’. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to profit from the benefits that such an environment has to offer and to contribute to the ongoing research.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful applicant will participate in the research project outlined below, collaborate with researchers from the international research community and report research findings at international conferences and workshops, in research journals, and by contributing to workshops for industry members of the European Supply Chain Forum. The research will be concluded by writing a Ph.D. thesis. A small teaching load (on average about 10%) is part of the job description. The project will be supervised by Prof.dr.ir. Paul W.P.J. Grefen, Prof.dr. Arjan J. van Weele and Dr.ir. Remco M. Dijkman.

Techniques must be developed that can qualify these variations and help overcome differences, due to these variations, when organizations with different business processes want to engage in business transactions. Also, a mapping must be developed from purchasing processes with their variants to an information systems architecture that can support them. The research method involves both fundamental research towards (formal) techniques for qualifying and resolving variance of purchasing processes and applied research to obtain purchasing processes from high-tech industry and qualify their variance.
Requirements
The successful applicant will have:
- a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Business Science or a similar field of study;
- a strong affinity with interdisciplinary research that involves both Computer Science and Business Science, as well as collaboration with high-tech industry;
- the ability to work on a challenging topic that has both basic and applied research aspects; and
- good communication skills and proficiency in English.
ORGANIZATION
The research will be conducted at Eindhoven University of Technology, at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences (IE&IS). It will be performed as a joint project of the Research Group of Information Systems and the Research Group of Innovation, Technology Entrepreneurship, and Marketing. The project is partly funded by the European Supply Chain Forum, a forum in which both academia and industry participate. Therefore, the project has a strong link with practice. The department IE&IS has two schools: the School of Industrial Engineering and the School of Innovation Sciences. The School of Industrial Engineering is one of the leading IE schools in Europe, with a strong presence in the international research and education community. Within the School of Industrial Engineering five degree programs are taught: BSc in Industrial Engineering & Management Science (Technische Bedrijfskunde), BSc in Industrial Engineering for Health Care, MSc in Operations Management & Logistics, MSc in Innovation Management, and PhD in operations, logistics and innovation management. The PhD program is embedded in the research school Beta. The School of IE also participates in the Logistics, Operations & Information Systems (LOIS) research cluster of the TU/e.
