Duties

We are looking for a Doctoral student to start working in the area of formal analysis of safety and fault tolerance. Current trend in development of safety-critical systems aims for higher flexibility and efficient deployment of assemblies of software (or configurable hardware) components. Digital components can be implemented with well-defined interfaces for composition and analysed pre or post-integration. A major challenge is to analyse the system level safety and fault tolerance properties using the contracted interfaces from the components. Formal analysis of such properties requires development of tools and techniques for qualitative as well as quantitative analysis of assemblies in terms of risk of violation of system safety. This position requires a strong mathematical background including discrete mathematics and probabilistic modelling as well as programming skills and analytical abilities.

Qualifications

As a doctoral student you must be eligible for doctoral studies which generally require an excellent degree in computer science or engineering or information technology. In addition attaining the above positions requires:

  • relevant courses with excellent grades in the above named areas
  • fluency in written and spoken English
  • experience in independent project work as well as ability to work in a team

Earlier research experience, e.g. as part of Masters studies will be considered as a merit.

A doctoral student spends more than 80% of the time on research and doctoral studies. Teaching and administration duties can make up to 20% of the total employment. The full time study period is four years with an option to take a Licentiate degree half way towards the end, which is normally five calendar years including teaching. Contracts are renewed on an annual basis subject to progress in the doctoral studies.
