A postdoctoral position is available at the University of Waterloo on a project in the area of database management systems and virtualization. Virtualization is becoming a critical technology in modern data centers. As the use of virtualization technology becomes more widespread, database management systems will commonly be deployed on virtual machines, rather than directly on the underlying physical ones. The goal of this project is to investigate the implications of this change. In particular, the project will explore techniques for automatic management of virtual database appliances on shared physical computing resources. This project is under the direction of Profs. Ashraf Aboulnaga, Ken Salem, and Johnny Wong.
The ideal candidate for this position would have the following qualifications:
- a Ph.D. in computer science or closely-related field
- a solid background in the area of database systems, including the ability
to conduct empirical research
- experience with virtual machine hypervisors, operating systems,
and related systems and tools
- a good command of spoken and written English
Background in the areas of performance analysis and modelling, control of software systems, or reliability and fault tolerance would be a plus.
The position is in the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. The School has over 70 faculty members and almost 300 graduate students working in all areas of Computer Science, and its graduate and undergraduate programs are among the strongest in Canada. The city of Waterloo is part of a highly-livable community of about 500,000 people located approximately 100km west of Toronto.
The anticipated starting date for this position is September 2008, but this is flexible. The position is for 12 months. The monthly salary will be approximately 4K Cdn, plus benefits.
