JOB SUMMARY
Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pending availability of funds. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and continued funding.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: Salary Commensurate with Qualifications
DUTIES: Writes specialized crawling software to locate, identify, analyze, and characterize virtual communities on the web starting from expert-identified seed sites and proceeding via social science theory-informed algorithms. Collaborates with social science personnel to incorporate social network, cultural, and rational choice models into crawling algorithms; to identify appropriate user inputs and outputs; and to design link and content analysis methods. Accepts ideas from social scientists in a variety of formats; flow charts, pseudo-code, and/or scripting code. Writes software to mine information websites or third-party resources, translating them into high-level concepts appropriate for virtual communities analysis. Documents code not only for further programming development, but to help in associating sections of code with appropriate social science models and concepts. Collaborates with other members of overall project to ensure compatibility between software being developed and related efforts at data collection, simulation, and analysis. Writes scientific articles describing the theory and implementation for presentation and publication at conferences and in journals. Applies for patents on intellectual property developed in the project.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: PhD in Computer Science or related field. EXPERIENCE: At least one year experience in working on projects involving web mining and/or design of web crawlers. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Expertise in Java programming language.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Familiarity with social science theories and methods, particularly social network theory, game theory, expected utility theory, and or content analysis. Experience working in collaborative teams with social scientists.
